Dame Anne was delighted to meet with Ellie Simmonds as part of Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training programme, an initiative designed to improve the quality of PE provision for young disabled people in mainstream schools in the UK.
As part of their 2012 Paralympic Games legacy, Sainsbury’s developed Active Kids for All Inclusive PE training to give teachers the confidence and skills to provide high quality PE for all young people. Sainsbury’s will be investing £1 million over four years in Active Kids For All training courses that will ensure over 500,000 young disabled children will lead healthier and more active lifestyles.
Dame Anne said “I know what an important part many of my constituents have played in collecting Active Kids vouchers, which is helping young children understand cooking and healthy eating from a young age. With the ‘Active Kids for All’ teaching programme it’s great to see how well the scheme is developing and the important part it plays in today’s educational society. I hope schools, groups and clubs across Aberdeen have fun collecting over the next few months and I hope even more will join this great scheme”
Today, Dame Anne appeared on ‘Daily Politics’ on BBC One discussing the relationship between Labour and the trades unions. You can watch the programme on iPlayer (44mins in). On the show, guests also spoke about the long-term investments in to sports following the success of London 2012.

Today Dame Anne praised Paralympics athlete Neil Fachie for winning Team GB’s third gold medal in the 2012 Paralympics track cycling. Fachie, who is from Aberdeen, secured the win in the one kilometre time-trial on Saturday.
Dame Anne said: “I am delighted for Neil who has once again broken a world record. His success highlights the sporting talent we have here in Aberdeen, following on from our Olympic medallists last month.”
Dame Anne Begg, MP for Aberdeen South has welcomed Royal Mail’s decision to revise its position on gold medal stamps for ParlaympicsGB gold medallists.
Following the great success of TeamGB at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Royal Mail has now announced it will produce a stamp for each individual or team ParalympicsGB gold medal win.
This will be the first time ever any host country has issued Gold Medal stamps for their Paralympic winners. Royal Mail will also continue to paint gold one of its iconic red post boxes in the home town of every ParalympicGB gold medal winner.
Following the announcement Dame Anne said: “I am delighted that the offer from Royal Mail has been increased to enable individual stamps to celebrate each Paralympic athletes’ gold medal achievement. The stamps for Team GB’s gold medallists have been such an emblematic part of our celebrations during the Games. I am delighted that our Paralympic heroes will be given the same honour.”
The 2012 Paralympic Games begins Wednesday, 29 August 2012, and ends Sunday, 9 September 2012 and will be broadcast on Channel 4.
This month, Dame Anne is urging local sports clubs to sign up for the ‘Join In’ weekend to seize the once in a lifetime opportunity of the Olympics.
The first Saturday and Sunday after the Olympic and before the Paralympics, 18th & 19th August, will be the weekend to turn up, take part, join in and support your local sports club. The “’Join In’ Weekend has been established with the aim of getting as many people as possible who have been inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to get involved at their local sports club.
Local sports groups will be able to take advantage of this unique moment, creating a shop window within their community of the opportunities that exist for individuals who want to help out, give time, support, watch or play sport.
Dame Anne said: “Every great champion started at their local sports facilities. I want to make sure that the local clubs in Aberdeen South make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity to get local people involved in whatever capacity, whether as players or coaches, drivers or tea makers.”
Any interested sports groups can access the ‘Join In Local Sport’ website – www.joininuk.org – which provides a place for clubs to register and advertise their event, where they will find practical advice to help them make the most of the weekend.
Dame Anne went to the Castlegate celebrations on the evening of Monday 11th June to see the Olympic torch formally arrive in Aberdeen. Speaking about the ceremony, Anne said: “It was an amazing evening and there was a fantastic reaction from Aberdeen folk welcoming the torch.”
On Saturday 14th January the opening night of this year’s Bank of Scotland Midnight League football tournament took place. 72 youths attended who all received free transport to and from the venue and 2 hours of free football at Strikers in the Bridge of Don.
The event was attended by Dame Anne Begg MP, the Lord Provost, as well as those who organised the event.
Dame Anne said “I was delighted to attend the opening of this year’s Midnight Football League and enjoyed meeting the young people who take part. The increasing popularity of the league not only demonstrates how much the participants enjoy it but also shows that it has been very effective in providing an opportunity for them to get together on a Saturday night.”
